Our Quest for Paradise—Elusive or Attainable? Most people have an idea of paradise as a place somewhere in the sun. It may be east or west of the sun. It may be the Virgin Islands, Bali, Mexico, Jamaica, or somewhere in the Mediterranean such as the Greek Islands; Paradise might be vacationing here on beautiful St. John and dining at Sweet Plantains restaurant—many of our guests often say. Paradise is a good cup of coffee at your favorite café. For some it’s a compelling book. For most it’s a great meal. For me it can be a good bottle of wine (Any one of Vision Cellars Pinot Noirs / Montes Purple Angle / anything Joseph Phelps), fine food accompaniments (like Rose’s shrimp in French Caribbean Creole sauce with smoky andouille sausage and coconut grits with crispy onions on top (aka shrimp & grits French West Indian style), or a hardy plate of Ropa Vieja), family, friends and peaceful, comfortable surroundings. Each person’s interpretation is perfectly fine, since paradise is a state of mind: your own little utopia even if it’s just for a moment. We spend most of our lives on a quest to find our own place in the sun; As if when we get there, we will experience eternal bliss. Our school years were a race to summer breaks and ultimately graduation. At work we are preoccupied with thoughts and plans of the up coming weekend, vacation and ultimately (and hopefully) a successful retirement. The 365 days calendar year is a countdown to that seven-day vacation in the sun. To close or begin: Paradise is a moment, day, week, or longer. A day at the beach; a week on beautiful St. John, or if you are fortunate enough to live here. Regardless of the time-span “paradise” is an opportunity to unwind, relax, rejuvenate and ultimately become acquainted with you; the freedom to do something or nothing at all. Paradise isn’t tangible. . . it’s a peaceful state of mind. A moment of feeling total fulfillment, peace, happiness for what you have accomplished or even about to accomplish. When you can’t get to St. John in the United States Virgin Islands, we hope that you’ll discover your inner paradise and go there anytime you need to getaway. This site is dedicated to our promise to take pleasure in all of those infinite little spaces in time on our quest to find “paradise.” Best Wishes Prince & Chef Rose Adams |
